We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open. – Jawaharlal Nehru
Hiking the caldera will surely reward you with amazing scenic route in Santorini. It’s an 11km walk (according to google) but I think it’s longer than that. From Fira, it’s a pretty straight shot to Aia through Firostefani and Imerovigli. The trail is very easy to follow and takes about 3-4 hours depending on your pace and photoshoot sessions. It is an excellent way to appreciate the views of the island of Santorini From iconic white houses, blue domes to wild formations of the volcanic unspoiled ground.
I walked there in beautiful sun and wind, the temperature was around 20 degrees. It was absolutely a perfect weather as far as I am concerned. Though there were not any places open for refreshments along the way, (probably because it was on late October), considered as off-season. I am glad to have brought some water and juice with me on the hike.If you are feeling more adventurous, hike up to the famous Skaros Rock to get the most breathtaking sea view. Be careful though as it’s a little challenging reaching the top.
It was half way through Oia when my body almost want to give up. I was the only one who dared to hike that day. I questioned myself, why do i really have to do this? What’s in it for me? I can just easily stop and take a bus. But despite of this, I continued. My heart can bare all the physical pain.
I am here simply because I crave for adventure, and i love to challenge myself.
I reached Oia just in time; the sunset here is truly remarkable. The crowds start forming at least an hour before sunset, and it gets pretty crammed so you have to be there early to get a perfect spot. I was also lucky to have met some few Filipino backpackers.I would definitely do it again if I went back to Santorini 🙂
